The Office of the Auditor General does not always have the power to conduct audit reviews of those institutions that receive government grants.
This was revealed by Auditor General, Ajay Nand while presenting their 2015 Annual Report to the Public Accounts Committee.
He says that the Office of the Auditor General does not decide on which institutions to audit adding that the legislation empowers them whether or not to audit.
Nand has also clarified that the Office of the Auditor General does have powers to review, however the client of the state entity may always refuse.
He has stressed that the law should empower the Office of the Auditor General to be able to carry out a review for institutions where they are not the auditor.
When questioned by Committee member, Aseri Radrodro, Nand highlighted that the Office of the Auditor General also does not conduct the audits or the review of audits for the University of the South Pacific or the Fiji National University that receives grants from government.
