Oceania expects nothing less but good sportsmanship on the court and friendly rivalry to bring out the best in each other.
This was highlighted by Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou at the opening of the FIBA U18 Oceania Basketball Championships where he added that this event provides great exposure on the world stage for Basketball Fiji with last year’s event being streamed live to an international audience of 345,978 viewers.
Tuitubou also highlighted that FIBA’s new senior competition calendar comes into effect in November 2017.
He says that this creates new opportunities for Oceania countries to compete in regular international competitions.
Tuitubou adds that this new system will see Oceania and Asia combine for competitions and qualification purposes with teams from both regions competing in a home and away style qualification process.
He says that this should serve as an impetus for Oceania teams to rise and accept the challenge and to play for Pacific pride.
Tuitubou says that in Fiji, basketball is growing from strength to strength and is fast becoming a first tier sport for our young people as we increasingly see hard courts with hoops appearing around the country.
