The number of workers being sent overseas under the Seasonal Workers Scheme is expected to increase this year.

Minister for Employment Jone Usamate confirms that they expect to send over 400 workers this year.

Usamate says that Fiji has been doing really well in terms of sending workers overseas as they have received good reports from overseas countries.

He adds that since joining the scheme in 2015, Fiji has had a really good reputation as other countries in the pacific have been sending workers for 10 years now.

Usamate says what they are trying to do now is screen the right people to be sent overseas as they do not want Fiji’s reputation to fall.

When asked on any confirmation on when the next lot of workers will be sent, Usamate says says that workers being sent overseas mostly depends on the requests from the overseas companies.

Usamate confirms that other fields of workers are now opening up as well as the most recent workers that were sent were hotel workers.
