Number of senior citizens increase at the Golden Age Home

There has been an increase in the number of senior citizens at the Golden Age Home in Natabua, Lautoka.

Golden Age Home superintendent Tara Naresh said they currently have 40 senior citizens from the western division.

Naresh said through the visit by Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni last year, eight senior citizens are now receiving monthly social pensions.

Meanwhile, Dr. Luveni said the Social Pension Scheme is for those who are 70 years and above and are not receiving any form of superannuation funds.

A total of 9,675 recipients are being assisted under the Scheme.

Dr. Luveni added the Ministry of Women also provides Bus Fare Concession scheme which is for 60 year olds and they are given 50 percent concession while people with disabilities are given full concession.

About 39,789 recipients have been assisted which includes 38,393 elderly beneficiaries and 1,396 beneficiaries for person=s living with disabilities.
