People in the northern division have asked the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority to look at the Capital Gains Tax and Fringe Benefit Tax.
The team is having public hearings on the Income Tax Bill 2015.
Chairman for the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights Ashneel Sudhakar confirms people have asked how the Capital Gains Tax is calculated and under what circumstances people need to pay this tax. He says the FRCA team explained that if anyone selling property makes a profit of more than 20,000 dollars may be required to pay a ten percent tax.
Sudhakar adds some employers also raised the question on why they are now required to pay the Fringe Benefit Tax for their employees. He says the employers are saying that this is an added burden on them as this tax was previously paid by employees. Sudhakar says the concerns have been noted.
The team will be in Savusavu tomorrow for the final hearing.
The committee consists of Anare Vadei, Salote Radrodro, Lorna Eden and Alvik Maharaj.
