North Korea test‑fired a ballistic missile from an area north of Pyongyang, but it failed seconds after it was launched.
The test comes with tensions high on the Korean peninsula, with this the latest in a series of missile launches by the North and warnings from US President Donald Trump’s administration that it was running out of patience.
The US military tracked the missile launch but officials said the missile did not leave North Korean territory and did not pose a threat to North America.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said the missile was likely a medium‑range KN‑17 ballistic missile.
A South Korean military official also said without elaborating that the launch was believed to be a failure.
He didn’t want to be named, citing office rules.
