Authorities do not seem to have a plan for the old Rewa Bridge.
The old Rewa bridge is one of the oldest structures in the country which has served the people for over 60 years but currently is closed as it represents a risk to the public and may partially collapse without warning.
The Fiji Roads Authority closed the bridge mid last year for security reasons and since then authorities have not come up with a plan whether they will maintain the bridge as a heritage site.
The then Works Ministry had confirmed in 2011 that the old Rewa bridge will be demolished and the materials will be used to build other bridges around the country.
When questioned, FRA’s CEO Jonathan Moore has today confirmed that there are no plans to demolish the old Rewa Bridge.
Moore adds that they are also not aware of any plans for the old Rewa bridge to be kept as a heritage site.
It is understood that it may take a lot of money to demolish the bridge.
We have also contacted the Nausori Town Council which is keen to have the old Rewa Bridge as a heritage site.
The old Rewa Bridge was opened in 1937.
