The Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions says no one in Fiji wants to go on a strike although the government has strongly tried to stop this through the Employment Relations Amendment Bill.
In a submission to the parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, FICTU General Secretary, Attar Singh rejected the Employment Relations Amendment Bill and called for the removal of restrictions on right to strike in essential services and industries.
He says in this day and age their members do not want to go on a strike because it would a huge sacrifice.
Singh highlighted that the amendment in section 10 of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill effectively takes away the right to strike of workers in essential services and industries altogether.
He told the committee to look at this issue very seriously as it is a serious violation of the right to strike under ILO Standards.
