The National Disaster Management today organized a Pacific Wave exercise to provide an opportunity for Pacific countries to test new products and review their tsunami response procedures.
Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Akapusi Tuifagalele said the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre enhance products are threat based on tsunami wave forecasts rather than based upon earthquake magnitude threshold and time or distance to impact.
He said these improvements should greatly reduce the number of areas warned unnecessarily and also provide some advance notice of potential local tsunamis.
Tuifagalele added that messages from the PTWC will be sent directly to the Tsunami National Contact and then to the Tsunami Focal Points whereby the Seismology Unit will make their own analysis on information given and decide independently on the relevant information to be issued to the public.
