New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced she is pregnant.
Ardern and her partner Clarke Gayford said they were expecting their first child in June and they both wanted a family but were not sure it would happen for them.
Arden says she met with Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peters yesterday to share the news and to ask him to take on the role of Acting Prime Minister for a period of 6 weeks after their baby is born.
Congratulations @jacindaardern on your wonderful news today. When we spoke this morning you sounded more excited than you did when you won the election! Lots of love and best wishes from me and Lucy and all of us across the ditch.

Arden says as is the case when she is in overseas, Peters will act as Prime Minister, working with her office while staying in touch with her.
She says she fully intends to be contactable and available throughout the six week period when needed.
Arden says they are privileged to be in the position where Clarke can stay home to be their primary caregiver.
Ardern will be the first New Zealand PM to give birth during her time in office, but not the first one worldwide.
Pakistan's former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had her first child in 1990 while in office.
