The construction of two new buildings at the University of the South Pacific’s Halls of Residence to accommodate 48 more students at the Laucala Campus is expected to be completed by the middle of Semester One this year.
The buildings, which are worth $2.8 million has three floors of accommodation.
According to the University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Rajesh Chandra, one of the major ambitions of the University is to increase student accommodation to 3,000 beds.
This significant increase is to ensure that students from all member countries can develop life-long networks that will facilitate regional co-operation.
Chandra says that on-campus accommodation protects regional students in terms of security, promotes student success as many facilities like computer labs are open 24 hours, and allows students to participate more in sporting and cultural activities.
Meanwhile, Chandra adds the USP is making efforts to develop a further 350 bed student accommodation before the end of the current Strategic Plan in 2018 at its Laucala Campus and to expand student accommodation at other major campuses.
