The Ministry of Education has confirmed that necessary work at Gram Sangathan School at Buiduna, Nausori is expected to start this week after a major landslide last Monday.
Permanent Secretary for Education Iowane Tiko says they will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the contractor early this week and work on building a retaining wall will start soon after the signing.
The Fiji Roads Authority had earlier advised the management of Gram Sangathan School to immediately address the landslide issue, as there is a risk of the school building collapsing.
FRA’s CEO Jonathan Moore had also requested the school manager to obtain the report from the Mineral Resources Department regarding the investigation on the vulnerability of the school during the rainy season and the continuous slipping of red clay from the compound.
School’s Manager Ravindra Prasad has told us that over $180,000 will be needed for the construction of the retaining wall which will be 65 metres wide and 27 metres in height.
