SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula today asked Acting Prime Minister and Acting Minister for Local Government and Environment, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to explain why is he not allowing Lorna Eden to talk.

Eden is the Assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment.

Nawaikula says the problem that they have is that the person responsible for the Ministry of Environment, Lorna Eden is not answering questions.

Nawaikula raised the issue when Sayed-Khaiyum was responding to questions relating to questions on what the government is doing to address the worsening garbage situation countrywide which is contributing to environmental and health issues.

Sayed-Khaiyum then clarified that Nawaikula may not be aware as to how government functions.

He says whoever is appointed the Acting Minister will respond to questions and that’s how the government functions.

Meanwhile, Sayed-Khaiyum says there needs to be a change in attitude first to deal the problem of littering.

He says some people think that by just throwing a plastic bottle on the road or somewhere else will make it disappear, however it’s not biodegradable.

Sayed-Khaiyum says they have also tried to change people’s attitude by stopping the usage of plastic bags by placing a fee at grocery stores, however people still use plastic bags in municipal markets and there is no levy on it.

He says they are also encouraging through the Ministry of Women for people to use bags that they can use later.

He says there have been community and school projects where the philosophy is on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
