Opposition member, Niko Nawaikula was cautioned three times while delivering his maiden speech in parliament yesterday.
Nawaikula started his speech by remembering those who lost their lives or those whose rights were abused as a result of the coups in the country.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Doctor Jiko Luveni cautioned Nawaikula to respond to President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau’s address in parliament.
According to the Order Paper, the debate was to continue on the motion moved by Prime Minister and Minister for I Taukei Affairs and Sugar on the President’s speech. While referring to the President’s speech, Nawaikula said that he does not think that the current constitution is the constitution of this country.
He further said that there is a need to convene a Constitutional Review Commission.
Nawaikula was again cautioned by the Speaker of Parliament.
Nawaikula also referred to 17 decrees passed in the last eight years and claimed that these decrees suppressed indigenous rights. He was cautioned again by the Speaker.
