Waste Management is an issue that we cannot afford to ignore in our daily lives.
Minister for Environment Praveen Bala highlighted this while receiving the new garbage compactor truck handed over by a representative of the Embassy of Japan, Tsuguyoshi Hada.
Bala said the Nausori Town Council had been using only one garbage compactor truck and two non-specialized trucks for waste management services since 2004.
He added the total cost of the compactor truck is $179,043.
Apart from this donation, other assistance provided to Nausori Town Council is the two volunteers from the Japan International Cooperation Agency who are helping out in the Engineering and Environment departments.
Bala said the garbage compactor truck will be used to assist in the collection of solid waste while reducing health risks to the collectors and the odour on the streets.
