People celebrate National Sports Day at Albert Park.

Sports are an extremely important part of people's lives.

Those were the words of Sports Minister Laisenia Tuitubou during the opening ceremony of the first ever National Sports Day at Albert Park today.

He said sports provides a space for building social ties and for self-improvement and in this modern day and professional era, sports provides a source of living.

He added we see young men and women leaving our shores regularly to take up employment in sporting clubs or organizations abroad.

He admitted that this is a fast emerging industry which holds great potential of new career paths and professions for our local athletes.

Remittances earned through sports are invaluable to the nation due to the ever increasing marketability of our Fijian sporting prowess.

The National Sports Day holiday was endorsed by cabinet on the 22 of May and especially set aside to allow all citizens of Fiji to understand the benefits of participating in sporting activities and to celebrate sports as a means of acquiring required physical fitness for a healthy daily routine.

Meanwhile, the Public Service Commission organized the sports day throughout Fiji which was opened simultaneously in Suva, Labasa, Lautoka, Sigatoka, Rakiraki and Nausori this morning.
