New Zealand’s West Coast communities are battening down the hatches in a bid to protect homes and businesses from a second cyclone in almost as many weeks.
Cyclone Gita is expected to make landfall tonight, bringing with it torrential rain and winds of up to 150kmh.
Nelson, Westport and Greymouth are expected to bear the brunt of the storm, which has freewheeled southwards after ravaging Tonga, Samoa and Ono-i-lau.
Authorities there are expected to trigger a state of emergency ahead of forecast flooding, storm surges and high winds.
