The National Federation Party has opposed the motion of increasing the allowances of ministers and parliamentarians by the Parliamentary Emoluments Committee.
Party Leader Biman Prasad also says that he and NFP MP Prem Singh will not accept any increase in allowances even if they are approved by parliament.
He insists on the establishment of an independent Emoluments Committee.
Prasad says that for accountability and transparency, an independent organisation should be established since the members of the parliament can be accused of determining their own salaries and privileges.
He says civil servants, teachers, doctors, cane growers and those earning 2.32 an hour are on modest or below poverty level income and this is adding salt to their injury.
