The National Disaster Management Office says with the continued raining, the risk of flooding is now high.
A forecast issued by the Fiji Meteorological Services earlier today predicts more rain tonight and tomorrow as an active trough of low pressure continues to affect the Group.
NDMO says the rains so far have saturated the ground and flash floods have been experienced in the Central Division. The streams and rivers have started to rise and with more rain tonight and tomorrow, the risk of flash flooding and flooding of low lying areas is now high.
NDMO has asked people to be alert especially during the high tides as this may worsen the situation.
National Disaster Management Office is advising the general public to be prepared and take heed of the heavy rain and flash flooding that has already affected some low lying areas. It says if there are signs that flooding is about to occur near your property, move important items to a higher floor or higher ground.
After heavy rainfall, stay inside until water levels have subsided. Do not allow children to play outside during heavy downpours or in flood waters. Do not walk or drive through flood waters of unknown depth and current. Tie up or nail loose items like iron roofs and clear tree branches around your house. Clear blocked drainage around homes to prevent flooding.
It says mariners -especially small boat owners are advised not to venture in rough seas to avoid incidents that may cause loss of lives.
The public is advised to continually monitor weather bulletins and forecasts on the radio or on the Fiji Meteorological Services Website at www.met.gov.fj.
