Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama said that he would like to see a fusion of music which promotes cultural inclusiveness and diversity.
Speaking to about 150 guests at the Fiji Performing Rights Association Awards held at the Grand Pacific Hotel last night, Bainimarama said that there is a new spirit in Fiji and that more and more people realise that we don’t have to remain locked in the past.
He also said that people in Fiji have begun to sing together in harmony and that musicians should also move away from the cultural separation that existed in the past.
Bainimarama also reminded local musicians and composers that he shares a determination to stamp out piracy and give musicians the money they deserve.
More than 10 awards were given out last night with Tomasi Mawi grabbing an award for his outstanding service to Fijian Music.
Local singer Alena Bravilala scooped the Best Music Video and the Best Composition award while the International Achievement award was given to the Rosiloa group.
The best new artist and the most popular song award went to Kula Kei Uluivuya group.
The best itaukei song went to Kitione Vunisasari.
Meanwhile, the late Sakiusa Bulicokocoko is one of the few artists that have been included at this year’s hall of fame category.
