A multi‑agency team deployed by government to Qamea two weeks ago has this week completed early relief and recovery works on the island.
The team was sent to Qamea Island following the landslides that caused significant damages to homes, farms, and public infrastructure.
Acting permanent secretary for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management, Loata Vakacegu says the different agencies had their sector‑specific objectives and responded accordingly to the humanitarian needs on the ground.
Vakacegu says the team conducted detailed damage assessments and provided relief supplies and temporary shelter to the affected people.
Some activities accomplished by the multi‑agency team include temporarily relocation of the Qamea Health Center to Vadradra Settlement, mosquito spraying was conducted in risk areas, distribution of 1,100 first aid kits and 82 Water Sanitation and Hygiene Kits.
Ministry of Education and RFMF engineers constructed a temporary learning space for Dreketi District School, distributed 5,000 planting material and 5,000 grams of vegetable and fruits seeds.
