Motorists are being reminded again that it is vital to give way safely when an emergency vehicle approaches as every second counts when emergency vehicles are called out to an incident.
The call comes as a fire truck hit another fire truck in Kinoya last week as a vehicle did not give way to the fire trucks that were rushing to a property fire in Cunningham.
The Land Transport Authority said it is concerned that some drivers stop in the wrong place and others don't give way to emergency vehicles at all, which is unlawful and can have devastating effects like loss of life and property.
The LTA said according to its regulations when approaching or being passed by an ambulance, a police vehicle or a fire truck which is sounding or displaying emergency signals, the driver must stop the vehicle or give way to the emergency vehicle.
The drivers have been advised not to slam their brakes or stop abruptly blocking the road or a junction as they can use their vehicles indicators to let other drivers and the emergency vehicle driver know the intent to pull over.
Failure to comply with this rule is an offence and the offenders will be penalised.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of $500 or 3 months imprisonment and 1 demerit point.
