A mother who was charged with the murder of her new born baby has been found guilty of the lower charge of infanticide by the Suva High Court.
The court heard that in 2012, Asena Senimoli gave birth to a new born baby and threw her in a river in Naitasiri causing the death of the baby girl.
Three high court assessors had found Senimoli guilty of the charge of murder however in his judgement Judge Justice Salesi Temo found her not guilty of murder but found her guilty of infanticide.
Justice Temo said Senimoli had not fully recovered from the effect of giving birth and acquitted her on the charge of murder however convicted her for infanticide.
She will be sentenced on the eve of Christmas.
