More than 500 people living in Korotari and nearby villages and settlements will now have easy access to Labasa town and facilities after a $557,628 bridge was opened today.
While opening the bridge, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama apologised to the people for the delay in the project.
He says they have to ensure that Fiji has resilient infrastructure that meets international best practice.
Bainimarama says roads and bridges are built to the high standards that are safe and with proper maintenance will give many decades of service.
He says over the years government has been investing and closely monitoring the implementation of various rural projects and programmes.
Bainimarama says this includes construction and resourcing of health centres, rural housing, upgrading education facilities, upgrade of non access roads, water infrastructure, development and provision of power supplies.
The Prime Minister stresses that the condition and status of rural roads continues to be a concern as he has highlighted in the last few months.
He says while this will take a long time to develop and require substantial investment, government has continued to allocate the highest priority of its national budget to the Fiji Roads Authority.
Bainimarama says infrastructure development in the rural areas is an area where they will pay close attention to.
He says the future plans on rural developments are well covered and addressed in the draft Fiji National Development Plan which is currently going through consultations.
Bainimarama says the first phase of the development plan aims to meet the citizens’ basic needs and progress to sustainable economic development in the second phase.
He has urged the people to use the consultation forum to raise concerns and make suggestions that they may have in the respective villages, settlements, tikina and provinces.
