More than 300 families in the province of Ra have been assisted through the Help for Homes Initiative yesterday.
The Raiwasa village headman, Semi Lomavatu says that they have a population of 432 and there 39 houses were damaged during the Cyclone Winston in February.
Lomavatu says that now the village is in the process of buying materials from the given hardware shops and soon they will be able to live a new life under the new roof.
The Vatuse‑ki‑yasawa village headman, Nasoni Naqura also stresses that more than 60 houses had been damaged.
Naqura says there are 500 people in the village and they all depend on the sugar cane farming and rebuilding a house was even far beyond their thoughts.
He adds that some people had been staying at the community hall which was also used as an evacuation centre.
The Help for Homes Initiative teams will be at the Social Welfare Office in Rakiraki, Veisaru School, Tavua College, and Social Welfare Office in Savusavu and Fiji National Council for Disabled Hall in Suva this week.
Meanwhile, under the Help for Homes Initiative, homes with partial roofing damage will receive $1,500, homes with complete roofing damage will receive $3,000 and homes that have been completely destroyed will receive $7,000.
