There was consistent domination of male inmates in our prisons between January and July in 2016.
This was a result of continuous increase in sex related cases, drugs and theft predominantly committed by men.
According to Fiji Corrections Service 2016 Report, there were 1,689 men in our prisons between January and July in 2016 compared to 1,407 male inmates for the same period in 2015.
Women inmates accounted for 48 in this period in 2016.
According to the report, male inmates recorded a 20% increase in the first seven months of 2016 while female inmates recorded a 46% decrease compared to the same period in 2015.
Most common offences committed by females were theft and obtaining money by false pretences.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service, Francis Kean says they have now started a new dedicated treatment program for sex offenders.
