The Department of Education of New South Wales, Australia, has donated 6,150 desks and 3,600 chairs to assist the schools affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.
Australian High Commissioner to Fiji Margaret Twomey says it is a great pleasure to make a small contribution to a very challenging problem for education in Fiji.
While receiving the furniture, Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy thanked the government and the people of Australia for their continuous support after the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston.
Dr Reddy says the furniture will be distributed to schools affected in Yasawa, Lomaiviti group, Vanuabalavu, Ra and the interior schools in Viti Levu.
He says priority will be given to the affected schools in the Maritime Islands and interior schools because a lot of people within Fiji have distributed furniture to the schools closer to the urban areas and main highways.
Dr Reddy says he will ensure that the furniture is distributed within the next two weeks.
