The Ministry of Fisheries is planning to work with the Agriculture Marketing Authority to provide a fisheries vessel and buy fish from the Gau Fishermen’s Association.
Discussions between the Gau Fishermen’s Association and the Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau were held during an official government tour of Gau Island yesterday.
The Minister was told by the chairman of the Association Kelevi Delai that one of the challenges they face is the transportation of their produce.
Koroilavesau says the same problem is faced by the Kadavu Fishermen’s Association so he will be sending a fisheries vessel every fortnight to Gau and Kadavu.
He also says the government would assist the three tikinas with a fibreglass boat each.
The Gau Fishermen’s Association has a total membership of more than 300 fishermen and was established in September this year.
