The Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation is expected to meet with the Fiji Bus Operators Association following concerns raised by some of the beneficiaries on the Bus Fare Concession.
During a public consultation in Navua yesterday, concerns of senior citizens being allegedly ill-treated by some bus drivers were raised with Minister Rosy Sofia Akbar.
A 71-year-old villager from Deuba, Sireli Tawake said he was told by a bus driver to take the ID card back to the bus companies to verify if the identification card was really from the Department of Social Welfare.
Akbar said they will organize a meeting with the Fiji Bus Operators Association to resolve the matter.
In 2011, an agreement was signed between the Fijian government and the Fiji Bus Operators Association which allows elderly people with age of 60 years and above to pay half the fare while people living with disabilities are eligible for free bus fare.
A total of 41,836 people are being assisted through the Ministry’s Bus Fare Concession program.
