It has been revealed that the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation received 4,566 cases through the child welfare act reporting system.
These cases include child sexual abuse, child neglect, child sent to school without food, and physical, emotional and psychological abuse of a child.
Minister, Mere Vuniwaqa says for 2017 they received most cases which was 1,145.
Vuniwaqa revealed this in Parliament today after Government MP, Ashneel Sudhakar asked her to elaborate on the trends in child abuse in the last five years.
Vuniwaqa says when the child helpline 1325 was introduced in 2014, the number of reports doubled from 2013 to 2014.
She says there is now a mechanism in place which has made reporting of child abuse cases more convenient and accessible to those who come across cases of child abuse.
