The parents of 24-year-old Tomu Toromai who died after falling from a fishing vessel in February this year, have received $24,000 compensation from the Ministry of Labour.
Speaking at the handover of the workers compensation cheque yesterday afternoon, Labour Minister Jone Usamate said normally the Ministry has to wait for another seven years before any compensation payment can be made in cases like this.
But, he said in this case, the Ministry managed to look at other ways to make the payment as soon as possible.
Joe Toromai who is the father of the later Tomu said money will not bring back his son.
He said the money will be used for the extension of their home in Marata village, Wailoku.
The late Tomu Toromai was on a fishing vessel with his two brothers when the incident happened.
