The Ministry of Sugar has received a report from the Indian government that was conducted by the railway experts that undertook an assessment of Fiji’s railway network and to recommend a plan of action for upgrading the network.
This has been confirmed to Fijivillage by the Permanent Secretary for Sugar Yogesh Karan who says that it is a comprehensive report.
Karan says that he will be submitting the report to Fiji Sugar Cooperation for assessment and review with the Board and await their directive.
A team of Indian Railway experts was dispatched to Fiji by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India following a meeting between Attorney‑General Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum and the Indian Minister for Railways, Piyush Goyal, during the World Sustainable Development Summit held in New Delhi.
Fiji had secured significant railway infrastructure development assistance from the Indian Government there.
In his meeting with the Indian Minister for Railways Sayed-Khaiyum expressed the urgent need for revolutionizing the existing Fijian railway network to not only cart far more cane by rail to the mills but extend it to transport everyday passengers and cargo.
Sayed‑Khaiyum says using an upgraded rail system in such a manner will relieve pressure on Fijian roads and is fundamental to the long term sustainable development of Fiji.
