The Ministry of Itaukei Affairs has endorsed the Heritage Bill of 2016 which is currently being reviewed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs.
Deputy Secretary of Itaukei Affairs Saimoni Waibuta has welcomed the component of the bill that allows them to register places called Potential World Heritage sites.
Waibuta said they identify heritage sites in the country but do not have any funding to maintain them.
Waibuta said most heritage sites are identified through their cultural mapping exercise.
The Heritage Bill provides for the recognition, management and protection of places with world heritage values in Fiji.
The Levuka Historical Town was nominated on the World Heritage List in June 2013 and became Fiji’s first UNESCO World Heritage site.
