The Ministry of Employment has been told to pull up its socks and monitor employers that are exploiting people on work attachment.
The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation is calling for more compliance and monitoring in this area.
CEO Nesbitt Hazelman says the law is clear and employers should follow it.
Hazelman is also calling on schools, tertiary education providers and the technical and vocational education sector to relook at their training models to ensure that they are meeting Fiji’s labour market.
Minister for Employment Jone Usamate says they are conducting their checks and trying their best to ensure that those exploiting people on work attachment are found.
The Employment Ministry has revealed that 57,047 unemployed people have been registered at the National Employment Centre from 2010 till January this year.
Majority of these unemployed people were below the age of 29 and 2,752 were Degree graduates while 3,500 had graduated with a Diploma.
It has also been revealed that 33 Masters graduates’ were registered between 2010 to January 2017 because they were seeking employment.
