The Ministry of Employment received a total of 2200 complaints on employment and employment standards.

This was revealed by Employment Minister Jone Usamate while responding to a written question by SODELPA MP Ro Kiniviliame Kiliraki on the number of complaints received by the ministry from workers for the year 2017 and the status of the complaints.

Usamate says that they have investigated and settled a total of 634 complaints while 1566 complaints remain to be dealt with and are in the final investigation stages.

He adds that the ministry has recovered $93,859.43 as payment for dues owed to workers in 2017.

Usamate says last year the ministry received the highest number of complaints from the Wholesale and Retail trade which was 483, the Security Industry had 303 complaints while the Hotel and Catering Industry had a total of 266 complaints.

He adds the highest number of complaints about these three industries was mainly in arrears of wages, overtime and meal allowance entitlement.
