The Ministry of Education has terminated the contract of an Education Officer and has issued 10 warning letters to others involved in the delay of classroom teacher appointments.
This follows the completion of an investigation into the handling of the classroom teacher appointments that commenced earlier this year.
Education Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had earlier highlighted that an investigation would be carried out by the Ministry in relation to issues of non-performance, deliberate giving out of wrong information and leakage of teachers’ personal information by Education Ministry administrators.
It was also earlier revealed that some Divisional Education officers had told some teachers that they did not have to sit for the Proficiency Test.
The Ministry of Education says the investigation has identified the root causes of issues behind the delays, which are now being addressed.
Sayed-Khaiyum says systemic problems have long been entrenched within the Ministry, and those problems are now actively being resolved through better, more transparent policy and clearer direction for the staff involved.
He adds that it was also very disturbing to note the release of false and misleading information.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they will ensure that the Ministry serves its teachers to allow them to focus entirely on the teaching of Fiji's students.
The Education Minister says they will remain vigilant in this mission and will continue to investigate any claims that impact the well-being and workplace environment of teachers, while also undertaking a serious programme of reforms to tackle the underlying issues affecting Fijian teachers around the country.
