Through their profiling exercise, the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation has identified that there are at least 20 mentally challenged beggars around Fiji.
Minister Rosy Akbar says they will be reaching out to more vulnerable communities in the near future and will continue to strengthen and expand this exercise around Fiji.
Akbar says although this continues to be a growing issue their main focus at the moment is locating the families of these people.
She says there are different ways in which mentally challenged beggars can be assisted when they return to their families.
The Ministry previously highlighted that it may build a facility in the future to provide shelter to the mentally challenged people on our streets.
