Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala says he is expected to meet with the Fiji Taxi Association and other taxi drivers in relation to an open taxi base system which may be implemented in Fiji.
This was recommended by the Ministry of Justice and Anti-Corruption in the LTA industry report that the current requirement of obtaining base permits be totally removed for taxis to allow all taxi operators to operate from any base which is designated in any municipal council or rural local authority.
Bala says he will soon be meeting with taxi drivers to get their views in relation to this.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Taxi Association does not want an open taxi base system to be implemented in Fiji.
General Secretary Rishi Ram says Fiji is not ready to use the open‑base system.
He says it would be a major problem as there is currently an over‑supply of taxi‑permits in the country.
