The Ministry for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations has announced the increment and implementation of the Minimum Wage Rates for 10 sectors under the Wages Regulations which comes into effect from yesterday.
There is a 4.1% increment for workers in the security services, 4.25% in the manufacturing industry and printing trades, 2.4% in building, civil and electrical engineering trades, 4.7% in road transport, 3.8% in the sawmilling and logging industry, 2.4% in hotel and catering trades, 5.25% in the mining and quarrying industry, 2.4% in wholesale and retail trades and 4.25% in the garment industry.
While speaking at the press conference this afternoon, Assistant Director Labour Standards Service, Atish Kumar said this was done by the tripartite consultation under the ILO convention.
He adds majority of the employers are paying above the National Minimum Wage and those who are not paying have to comply with the order.
Kumar adds the increment is achieved due to the positive economic growth for the past five years and they review the rates depending on the performance of the industries.
