A 35‑year‑old serving inmate who was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment last year for stealing a number 14 chicken had his sentence reduced to 3 months imprisonment today by Suva High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar.
Nemani Talau had appealed against the 12 months imprisonment sentence given by the Suva Magistrates Court last year.
Talau had submitted that his sentence was excessive in all circumstances of the crime.
Talau was charged with one count of theft and he pleaded guilty to stealing a number 14 chicken from Pak and Save Supermarket in Nausori on November 26th last year.
While delivering his judgement today, Justice Goundar stated that the man walked out of the supermarket without paying for the chicken.
He also said the value of the item stolen was small and the crime caused no loss to the supermarket as it was returned.
