A man convicted of two counts of raping a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced to 14 years and 11 months imprisonment by High Court Judge Justice Achala Wengappuli.
The trial proceeded in the absence of the accused and Justice Wengapulli concurred with the unanimous opinion of the assessors and found the man guilty.
The court was informed that the girl was living with her family and the accused also lived with them for three weeks prior to the incident.
The first incident happened at the girl’s house while the second incident happened away from home.
The man has been given a non-parole period of 12 years and 11 months.
