A man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by the Labasa High Court for raping a 62-year-old woman.
The man had raped the woman while she was asleep in her house after returning from a grog session on the 30th of January last year in Kioa Island.
Judge Justice Daniel Goundar stated that the woman considered the accused as her adopted son as she had raised him.
Justice Goundar says women have the right to dignity and freedom from any form of sexual offence.
He adds that the impact of rape is felt on both the body and soul of the victim.
A non-parole period of five years has been set.
