A man who raped a 63-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment by Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.
While sentencing Sione Sadrugu, Justice Rajasinghe said it was proved at the conclusion of the hearing that Sadrugu and his friend took the 63-year-old man to an unknown place pretending that they were taking him to the house of a person who took his mobile phone from a nightclub.
Sadrugu’s friend drove off in the victim’s rental car while Sadrugu stayed back with the 63-year-old man and raped him.
Justice Rajasinghe told Sadrugu that the victim treated the two as his friends and treated them well during the evening prior to the incident.
The judge told Sadrugu that the act of rape is the worst form of sexual offence which physically degrades a human being.
He said it requires an active judicial intervention to demonstrate that such offences are condemned and denounced by the civilised society without any reservation.
Sadrugu is not eligible for parole for a period of six years.
