A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment by the Nausori Magistrates Court for assaulting a police officer.
According to the summary of facts, Peni Tukai on the 17th of August this year when police came to arrest him for some offenses, he picked up a piece of timber and struck a police officer’s left ankle causing him injuries.
The mitigating factors which Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne considered was that Tukai is the sole breadwinner of the family.
In his closing remarks, Magistrate Somaratne said a violent attack on those who work in law enforcement is an attack on society itself.
