High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge has sentenced a man to 6 years imprisonment for a count of aggravated burglary.
Naioko Kami had pleaded guilty to robbing a woman of her Samsung J5 mobile phone worth $600 in Navua.
The incident happened in February this year.
Kami with another had unlawfully intruded into the rented premises of the victim in Navua whilst she slept.
It was heard in court the victim woke upon hearing intruders in her home and she confronted one of them.
It was also heard that the victim had her Samsung J5 mobile in her hand and she struggled with the other person who grabbed her neck. During this time the accused fled the victims home whilst she struggled with other person.
While sentencing the man Justice Aluthge says the courts have a duty to denounce and deter this kind of anti‑social behaviour that will necessarily instill fear in innocent people.
He says these kinds of offences will undoubtedly cause panic and eventually affect the general public as a whole adding a serious crime has been committed and the sentence must necessarily reflect the plight of the victim, without jeopardizing the accused’s chances of rehabilitation.
