A man who was earlier given a suspended sentence by the Nausori Magistrates Court for causing death by dangerous driving has been sent to prison for two years by the Suva High Court.
Leveni Waitui was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failure to comply with requirements following an accident, driving a motor vehicle without a driver’s license and driving a motor vehicle in contravention of third party policy risks.
He had pleaded guilty to the charges and the Nausori Magistrates Court had sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years.
The incident occurred on 24th February in Waila, Nausori.
The court heard that Waitui fell asleep while driving and ran over the victim.
High Court Judge Justice Paul Madigan said that this driver can never be said to be fit and proper person to be in charge of a vehicle at any time.
