A 21-year-old man convicted of one count of rape has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe.
The court was informed that Ratu Luke Sova raped a 16-year-old girl on the 20th of June, 2013.
The court heard that Sova has no adverse record of previous convictions, engages with community activities, provides leadership and is a rugby player who plays for his regional rugby club.
While sentencing Sova, Justice Rajasinghe said it is unfortunate that a young person like Sova with a bright future ahead has fallen into a moment of lustful desire and committed a crime of this nature.
He has been given a non-parole period of five years.
