A 22‑year‑old who raped a 74‑year‑old woman has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment by High Court Judge Justice Vinsent Perera.
Meni Raitekiteki was convicted of one count of rape, one count of aggravated robbery and one count of giving false information.
After considering the time Raitekiteki has spent in custody, Justice Perera has given him a head sentence of 17 years.
While sentencing Raitekiteki, Justice Perera said that his act was monstrous and dreadful and being a 20-year-old at the time of the incident, he chose an elderly woman for his prey.
He says considering his previous conviction the court finds him a habitual offender and the court does not find any mitigating factors in this case.
Justice Perera also considered the vulnerability of the victim and the nature of assault as Raitekiteki raped the elderly woman while her hands were tied together and she sustained serious injuries.
Justice Perera says although he is a younger offender, he is not the first offender.
He has been given a non-parole period of 14 years.
He has been given 30 days to appeal.
