Man gets 13 years for raping niece

A 52-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old niece in the Northern Division last year.

While sentencing the man, Judge Justice Salesi Temo highlighted that he lived in the same settlement as the complainant.

Justice Temo said the man had breached the trust the girl had in him by raping her.

The man had raped the girl in her own house in June last year which was vacant at that time.

He added this is yet another case of a rape of a child and the court will not stand idly by and watch the most vulnerable been exploited by adults.

Justice Temo said a deterrent sentence will be given to warn other would be offenders.

The man will be liable for parole after spending 10 years behind bars.
