Parambir Maharaj who was allegedly operating as Doctor Robert appears at Nasinu Magistrates Court

A 51-year-old man who was allegedly operating as a doctor without any qualification or registration appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court in the last hour.

Police say Param Vir Maharaj who is not registered or a qualified medical practitioner was operating as a doctor since last year.

Maharaj is remanded in custody till the 19th of this month.

Police prosecutor, Pauliasi Lutunauga objected to bail as he said Maharaj is likely to reoffend if he is released on bail and may abscond bail.

Maharaj’s lawyer is expected to make an official bail application on the 19th of this month.

Chief of Intelligence and Investigations, ACP Henry Brown said the Criminal Investigations Department began the investigation in June this year after information was received that the accused known as Doctor Robert was allegedly operating as a private practitioner at his Omkar Road, Narere residence illegally.

ACP Brown said the Fiji Medical Board has confirmed that the accused was not registered as a practitioner.

He said that a search was conducted at his home where they found items alleged to be used during the course of his practice.

He has been charged with one count of using the title of doctor, one count of practicing as a medical practitioner without being registered, and one count of obtaining financial advantage.

ACP Brown said investigations continue to locate 126 patients whose folder cards were seized from the accused residence.

Anyone with more information can call the CID headquarters on 3315599.
